KIHT Gift Shop

A shop built around the wrapping table

KIHT started as a spare shelf in a corridor and became a room with a bell on the door. Everything we sell fits on it, which is a deliberate limit.

How it started

We only stock what we would hand a friend

The first year we sold eleven things and gave most of them away, which turned out to be the useful part. A mug that feels wrong in the hand cannot be talked up by a photograph. So the rule became simple: if it does not survive a week of being used at the shop, it does not go on the shelf.

That is why there are sixteen lines and not sixteen hundred. It is also why we run out of the bud vase every time the kiln opens — one workshop, six pots a month, no second supplier standing by.

The trade-off is real and we would rather say it plainly than hide it: if you want a specific thing, we will tell you when the next batch lands instead of pretending we have it in the back.

The shelf Who made it

Eleven workshops, none of them us

We do not manufacture anything. We buy well, we wrap well, and we pay on receipt.

  • Stoneware
A two-person pottery forty minutes north. They fire to a schedule, not to a marketing plan, which is why the oatmeal glaze is only ever in batches of sixty.
  • Linen
Woven in a mill that has been running the same looms since 1974. We buy the offcut rolls, which is why the totes are the natural colour.
  • Beeswax
Four hives in the next valley, harvested in September and poured by hand. Slight colour variation between pours is normal.
  • Paper
A bindery that still thread-sews on a 1960s machine. It costs more and it opens flat, which is the whole point of a notebook.
  • Brass & walnut
Spun and cut by one man who will not take on apprentices. Plan your holiday around the lead times.

How it works Behind the counter
